Charger plates, to be or not to be?
What is a charger plate?
In short and simple terms, a charger plate is a decorative plate used to decorate a formal table setting or setting for a special occasion. Chargers come in all types of styles and materials. They often come in different shapes as well and together with the textiles used on the table, help to provide an elegant look and feel to every table setting.
Charger plates with a purpose
Even though the sole purpose or use of charger plates nowadays are purely for decorative reasons, centuries ago when they were first used their main use was to collect spillage from plates during dinner service, thus protecting the table-cloth and place mats incase you have one that is delicate and cannot be washed. Adds dimension and sometimes texture to a dinner table.
Two General Rules for Using Charger plates
The most important thing to remember when using charger plates, is to never ever place food directly onto a charger plate. Another thing to remember is that, charger plates should be removed from the table before serving dessert.
Materials and Shapes
Charger plates can really add some depth to a table setting because they come in all different shapes and materials. For example, I have seen some really beautiful charges in glass, faux leather, faux wood,  and painted acrylic. Popular shapes  for charger plates are square and circle, which are created generally to complement that of the general shape of dinner plates.
Additional uses for Charger plates
Charger plate can be used for general decor as well. Adding a candle or a floral arrangement to the middle of a charger plate on an entry table or centerpiece is very attractive. You can also add a doily or a linen napkin to a charger plate and use it to serve appetizers or desserts.
