Homemade Bread – Garlic/Onion

It’s soup season! What goes better with soup than fresh home made bread? Aaaah NOTHING! This season you can make fresh breads to go with your delicious homemade soups. Today I am sharing a very simple and versatile recipe for Homemade Garlic or Onion bread. This bread is so easy to make, you will be making it for a  bunch of different occasions trust me.

This recipe will yield either one large loaf or 24 medium sized rolls.

Homemade Bread - Garlic/Onion
This delicious and versatile bread recipe is simple to make and oh so easy to eat. Goes well with soups or as a general side to any meal.

Ingredients
  • 1½ cups warm water
  • 1 package of yeast
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • ½ tbsp garlic powder (or onion powder)
  • ¼ cup finely chopped garlic ( or finely chopped onion)
  • 5 cups flour
  • For topping
  • Create an egg wash by beating an egg in a small bowl and adding a tbsp or two of water
  • Parsley flakes for topping (optional)
Instructions
  1. In a large bowl dissolve yeast in warm water.
  2. Once the yeast has dissolved add in the oil, sugar and egg and stir well.
  3. Add in salt and garlic powder and finely chopped garlic (or onion powder and finely chopped onion)
  4. Add in flour and combine all ingredients until completely mixed.
  5. On a floured surface kneed dough into a ball for about ten minutes. (dough should bounced back when pushed in the middle of the ball of dough)
  6. Drizzle about a tbsp of oil in the bottom of the bowl and place the dough back into the bowl to rise.
  7. Dough should be covered with clean clothes so that it is completely covered and warm for one hour.
  8. Pre heat oven to 350 degrees
  9. Either braid the dough or roll into buns.
  10. Brush the top of the dough with egg wash and sprinkle parsley flakes or any other herbs over it.
  11. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes then allow to cool for at least ten minutes before breaking apart or cutting.
