Using Textiles to Create the Perfect Tablescapes
TABLESCAPE – An artistic arrangement of articles on a table.
Textiles are a very important part of the tablescape. When we talk about textiles for the table, we are mainly referring to tablecloths, table runners, place mats and napkins. Choosing the right textiles can really elevate your table decor. The more fabric that is introduced to the table the warmer it will feel, and it will set the stage for that special occasion dinnerware you’ll be using.
Tablecloths
Tablecloths are not necessarily needed for every occasion. If you’ve got a beautiful table, then by all means show it off. The benefits of using tablecloths can be found in practical uses, such as protecting a table from being scratched or damaged during use. OR. They can also be used to turn a not so pretty or aging dining table into a beautiful table.
Tablecloths are almost always used for fine dining. Think of them as the canvass or the foundation of a perfect work of art. The color and fabric choice of your tablecloth will set the tone and mood of your tablescape. After choosing the right tablecloth the base is set to layer up with other textiles and accessories like charger plates, dinnerware, flatware and glassware.
Table Runners
Table runners are used to create dimension and add an accent to the tabelscape, either by introducing a pop of color or a pattern to the table. Runners made with faux leather, fur, suede or beads, help to elevate a tablescape by creating another texture to the table and often the feeling of luxury. No matter what kind of runner is used the most important thing is for it to compliment the other elements, especially if it’s placed on top of a tablecloth. In the picture below we used the gold and white table runner to accent the table and pull from the gold in the dinnerware set.
There are two general ways runners are typically used. Either straight down the middle of a table lengthwise or across the table . When using across the table if it is a long rectangular table you can use one across the middle or you can use two or three going down the length of the table.
Place mats
Place mats are going to add yet another level of dimension to the tabelscape as we layer up. They are going to be that pop of color between your tablecloth and charger plates or dinnerware and another layer of texture. The shape of the place mat will frame your dinnerware, creating a portrait like appearance at each place setting. In the picture below we used a purple placemat in between the grey table runner and silver charger plate creating an accent color and framing our dinnerware.
Napkins
Nothing says fine dining like a beautiful cloth napkin. When you break out the fine china, you have to go all the way! Paper napkins are NOT going to do it. With cloth napkins you can either go purely decorative or pretty but practical. If you choose decorative then you should provide another napkin for practical use. When we are laying textiles, the napkin is normally the cherry on top because its the first textile that your guests will actually come into contact with. The pure white napkin used in the setting below adds to the sheer elegance of the tablescape and compliments the luxury style faux fur runner.
Textiles First
When creating a fabulous tablescape, it is to your advantage to first consider your textiles before making any decisions about accessories for the table. Textiles are the life of the table, they make it warm, sophisticated and stylish.
