5 Tips for Using Centerpieces Effectively

Centerpieces are the focal point of all table decorations. How we use them makes the world of difference to how our table settings are received. I always believe there is no ‘wrong’ way to do things, as the saying goes there is more than one way to skin a cat.  Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you create those unique centerpieces to go along with your dinner table decor.

Height

1.     The height of your centerpieces is VERY important. I can remember going to a dinner party ,the hostess had beautiful floral arrangements in the center of each table.  The problem was that the center pieces were so tall that the people sitting at the table couldn’t see each other. There we were trying to talk to each other across the table and I remember feeling like we were in a jungle looking through the trees! We were leaning left and right trying to talk to each other. What a disaster! Be mindful of the size and height of your centerpieces. You want them to be pieces your guests can talk about NOT talk around!

Safety

2.     Safely First! Your centerpieces should be sort of tip-over resistant. Be sure they are standing firmly on the table.  Never place a centerpiece on the table that will tip over if the table is slightly bumped as guests pull their chairs in to sit. This is especially important if the centerpieces contain water or a lit candle.

Perception

3.     Be careful that your centerpiece doesn’t overwhelm the rest of your table setting, unless that is what you want it to do. In any case the centerpiece should compliment the rest of the table décor. You don’t want all your other hard work to go unnoticed.

Smell

4.     Avoid using scented candles and strong smelling florals in your centerpieces. Besides aggravating people with allergies, you will also take away from the true aromas of the food you are presenting. As smell and taste go hand in hand it’s better to keep those additional scents off of your table to allow your guests to take in the aromas of your delicious dishes.

Space

5.     Multiple centerpieces can be really beautiful, but remember to leave space on the table for additional items like salt and pepper shakers, breadbaskets and butter or gravy dishes.

I hope these tips are useful to you during your next Dinner Party!!
